About Phone Sessions

I originally started doing phone sessions at the request of a client who had relocated
to another country but wanted the continuity of having the same counselor during her
transition. I was somewhat skeptical about the concept at first, but I soon discovered
that it made little difference to the effectiveness of our work together. That was
several years ago. By now I have phone clients on three continents, and they--and I--
feel very comfortable with the format. I do not recommend phone counseling
(sometimes called "distance counseling") for depression or other serious disorders.
However it can be an effective alternative for many issues. It can also be a practical
alternative for a person living in a place where English-speaking counselors are not
locally available.

What to Expect from Counseling

A counselor can help you identify problem areas, explore factors which may be
contributing to them, and provide you with options and approaches to consider.
Counseling is not something that's done to you; on the contrary, you are called upon
to play a very active role in the process, and to form a team with your therapist to
work toward agreed upon goals. You may be asked to keep a daily journal, read self-
improvement articles, practice new behaviors.... The goal in counseling is to draw
upon your strengths to help you resolve your problems. Counseling is a way of
helping you to help yourself.

Please see "About Me" for a description of my counseling philosophy and
orientation.
